Canon or Nikon

I’m here to give my final opinion/review on whether Canon or Nikon makes the better entry level DSLR. I really enjoyed researching and testing out both of these cameras and I’ve been surprised more than once during this process.

Let me first start off by stating my final opinion then I’ll tell you why. My opinion on whether Canon or Nikon makes the better DSLR is that they’re both fantastic cameras. I didn’t feel comfortable making a definitive statement on which of the two cameras was the better one because they’re both great.

When you sit the two cameras side by side on paper, the specs and features are virtually identical. It seems that the Canon or Nikon debate is similar to the Chevy or Ford debate; there isn’t much debate just a whole lot of opinion.

I honestly loved both cameras. In the end I ended up buying the Canon T2i over the Nikon D3100 because I just felt more comfortable with how the Canon felt and functioned. That is most likely because I’ve used Canon cameras before and the Nikon was “different;” but not worse by any means.

No matter which camera I would have chosen, I knew that I would have to buy at least one new lens to help the camera capture better images both near and far. Since I have a canon SLR, I can use the telephoto lens on my T2i and save myself a little bit of money.

When you decide between the Canon or Nikon you are making a decision that will stay with you the rest of you photographic life because you will buy accessories, lenses, and what have you specific to that brand.

I recommend that you try several cameras before you buy one. Even though the Canon T2i and Nikon D3100 are on the lower price range of DSLR cameras, they’re still not “cheap.” Buying any brand of DSLR willy-nilly could end up costing you a lot of money in the future; especially if you buy lenses or any brand specific accessories.

For every pro or con I have about one camera, someone else will have an opposite opinion. Like I mentioned previously about both cameras, both shoot great in low light conditions. Both take superb images.

Both Canon and Nikon offer full high definition (1080p) video which is a huge plus for me and what I want in a camera. Both camera bodies are well built and are easy to navigate. For my personal likes the Canon fit me a little better than the Nikon did.

I would have to field test this out a little more, but I think the Nikon does slightly better with color quality in the image, but it was so slight that it wasn’t a deal breaker for the Canon. And besides, I usually do some sort of color or image correction on the images I keep and like.

So there you have it, a potentially disappointing answer or very encouraging answer to the Canon or Nikon debate depending on how you look at it. In my personal, non professional, opinion the amateur photographer would be happy choosing the Canon or Nikon DSLR camera to be their photographic companion.

Ryan here again in continuation of the journey to find out if the Canon or Nikon Digital Camera is better than the other. I reviewed the Nikon D3100 in my previous blog post; I will give my thoughts and impressions of the Canon T2i in this blog.

Well, to my dismay, I was shocked how much I liked the Canon T2i after having such a remarkable experience with the Nikon D3100. The Canon or Nikon digital camera seems to be the perfect entry level DSLR and after testing out both brands, I totally understand why that’s true.

The Canon T2i stacks up well with the Nikon D3100 on paper. I did however, like the 3” LCD screen on the Canon T2i and the overall feel of the camera; it didn’t feel like a tank or a cheap plastic toy either. The Canon T2i seemed to fit a little better in my hands when I was testing one out at a local retailer.

It might be because I’ve used a Canon SLR in the past (junior high and high school) I felt more comfortable “navigating” around the camera features. A few of the toggle buttons and settings buttons were very easy to find and use.

The image quality was great. I’m not a professional photographer but I had no complaints with the 18 megapixel images the Canon was shooting. Some people have mentioned something about the white balance being off, but not being a pro I didn’t see that problem.

I either had a better camera than what another reviewer had or I just don’t know what to look for. Either way I was impressed with how sharp the images were and how quickly the camera snapped off pictures.

The high definition (1080p) video capabilities are a huge selling point for me. With a quick turn of the dial I can go from pictures to full high definition video in a snap and capture a moment better than a still image could.

I don’t do photography professionally, but I do want a quality camera that can capture choice moments in my life and journeys and the Canon T2i seems like a great companion in that pursuit.

I forgot to mention how great the Canon T2i did in low light conditions. Admittedly, I had to create a low light situation since I was in a well lit retail store (I did the same thing when I tested the Nikon D3100) but the camera performed fantastic.

I really liked how easy it was to figure out the settings on the Canon T2i. The camera seems very user friendly especially for an amateur photographer just getting into DSLR’s. I think I could really benefit from reading the entire user manual and/or taking a photography class to better learn how a DSLR works so I can take better pictures.

But even without a class, I feel confident that I could take quality images and video with the Canon right out of the box.

Overall impressions of the Canon T2i are that I love it, it’s easy to use, and I’m very impressed with its quality. Even after testing both cameras, it’s still hard to say if the Canon or Nikon Digital Camera has an edge over the other.

If you’re like me and want to step up your amateur photography to the next level, you’ve probably asked yourself the same question I asked myself – should I use a Canon or Nikon DSLR?

From what I’ve been able to research so far, Canon and Nikon seem to have the best professional grade cameras and by far the best “entry level” DSLR’s. I’ve been a Canon guy most my life but have always been curious about Nikon.

The Nikon D3100 seems like it would be the right camera for me from the Nikon DSLR family to start with. The reviews on most photography retail sites couldn’t be more positive for the Nikon D3100.

What interested me in researching the Nikon D3100 is that it’s a high quality entry level DSLR that works with the budget I’m willing to spend right now. If you read enough reviews you’ll see the top professional photographers rip into the Nikon D3100 because they’re, well professionals.

The Nikon D3100 has a pretty good kit lens, but it seems like almost everyone recommends upgrading the lens soon after buying the camera. Even with a mediocre lens, people rave about how sharp the pictures turn out and how life like the colors are.

Another great feature about the Nikon D3100 is its low light capabilities. Many reviewers said that they are able to shoot without a flash and get near perfect pictures while others have to use a flash to get a pretty good picture.

Something that really perked up my interest in this DSLR is that it will shoot 1080p video. That’s amazing! I’ve been taking pictures at an event or on vacation and sometimes a picture don’t fully capture the moment like a short video would. High definition video is a huge selling point for me.

After going to a local retailer to actually hold and look at the Nikon D3100, I really liked it. I can tell that it will take some getting used to since the ergonomics of the camera weren’t perfect for me, but not necessarily a deal breaker either.

Holding the camera and snapping off a few pictures in the store really opened up my eyes to what I’ve been missing by using just a normal pocket sized digital camera. I don’t plan on using this camera to make a living, but I would love for it to capture important moments of my life.

That leads me to something else I really like about the entry level DSLR’s, besides the great price, is that I can always get different lenses to help capture whatever it is I’m shooting at; i.e. sporting event or a birthday or even a beautiful sunset. The main camera body has all the necessary function I need to set up the camera to take the best picture possible and getting a few higher quality lenses will help augment the cameras ability to capture the perfect moment.

After testing out the Nikon D3100 and being so impressed with it, Canon sure will have its work cut out to persuade me to their camera. From what I can tell, I’d be a very happy man buying the Nikon D3100. But to be fair to myself, my future photographic endeavors, and to you fine people I will test out the Canon T2i to find out which Canon or Nikon DSLR is truly the better camera.
